Softball Recap: Shiprock Comes Up Short

Shiprock had lost eight straight on the road, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 6-16 to make it nine. They lost 17-2 to the Bernalillo Spartans. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Chieftains of the 16-1 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in March of 2018.

As for Bernalillo, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 13-10. Considering they have won ten games by more than eight runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

For Bernalillo's part, the team relied heavily on Neiva Montoya, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. Montoya has been hot recently, having posted three or more hits the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Ryanna Mortensen, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Shiprock will venture away from home to challenge Newcomb at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Bernalillo, they will face off against Albuquerque Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Chargers have averaged an impressive 8.8 runs per game this season.
