High school football: No. 1 Mater Dei, No. 9 St. John Bosco rosters feature 76 players with at least one FBS offer

By Zack Poff Oct 10, 2023, 10:00am

Aydin Breland, Elijah Brown, Brandon Baker, Marcelles Williams, Peyton Woodyard, Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa headline talent featured in Friday's matchup.

When No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and No. 9 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) meet Friday at Panish Family Stadium, 76 players with at least one FBS offer are expected to take the field. There are a combined 44 players rated as a three-star recruit or higher on 247Sports.

Over the past decade, Mater Dei-St. John Bosco has become the biggest game in high school football and hottest rivalry. Since 2016, both have finished ranked in the top 10 nationally in every season and have combined for four national championships.

Mater Dei went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in 2017 and 2021. The 2017 team never trailed at any point in the season. St. John Bosco finished No. 1 in 2019 and 2022.

The top-ranked Monarchs have 40 players with at least one FBS offer. Twenty-four of them are rated as a three-star recruit or higher. Most of the program's Class of 2026 and 2027 stars haven't been evaluated yet so that number isn't entirely reflective of the depth of talent on the roster.

St. John Bosco has 36 players with at least one FBS offer. Twenty are rated as a three-star recruit or higher. The Braves have a combined 38 players that are rated as a three-star recruit or higher, or have landed at least one FBS offer. Two players rated as three-stars are yet to land an FBS offer.

The high point of the rivalry may have been the 2019 CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship. Bosco erased a 28-5 first-half deficit and pulled out a 39-34 win after scoring 34 unanswered points. DJ Uiagalelei threw for 446 yards and five touchdowns while Bryce Young threw for 405 yards and five scores.

After St. John Bosco won six in a row from 2011 until 2015, the Monarchs have won eight of the last 12 meetings. The Braves prevailed in the last meeting, 24-22, in the 2022 CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship en route to claiming their second MaxPreps National Championship since 2019 and handing Mater Dei its only loss since 2020.

Read on for a rundown of the stars on both teams heading into Friday's game. Player rankings are via 247Sports.
