Basketball Recap: Sanderson Spartans vs. Leesville Road Pride
Sanderson was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their 18th straight defeat dating back to last season. They took a blow against the Leesville Road Pride, falling 69-25. While losing is never fun, the Spartans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 539th, while the Pride are ranked 97th).
Despite the loss, Sanderson still got an impressive performance from Devon Whitluck, who posted six points. Hannah Sayre was another key player, putting up four points and five rebounds.
Mattie Matonic was nothing short of spectacular for Leesville Road: she went 7 of 10 on her way to 15 points and three steals. Matonic has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Molly Zuburg, who scored six points in addition to seven assists and four steals.
Sanderson's loss dropped their record down to 0-14. As for Leesville Road, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 10-4.
Sanderson wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 66-25 defeat against Cardinal Gibbons on the 28th. Leesville Road has also already played their next game, a 63-12 win against Enloe on the 28th.
