Basketball Recap: Coal Ridge's Run of Five Straight Victories Now Over

Coal Ridge and Colorado Academy squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but Coal Ridge had to settle for second. They fell to the Colorado Academy Mustangs 67-62. The Titans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Mustangs apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2017.

When it comes to explaining why Coal Ridge lost, don't look at Ben Simons. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Simons is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down eight or more in each of the last 12 games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Gio Ervin, who shot 55% from the field to rack up 14 points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Coal Ridge smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in January.

Clyde Love was his usual excellent self, going 10-for-16 en route to 29 points for Colorado Academy. That's the most points Love has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was River Hamm, who scored 14 points.

With the loss, Coal Ridge broke their five-game winning streak and moved their record to 20-7. As for Colorado Academy, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-9.

Coal Ridge does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Colorado Academy, they have already played their next match, a 71-54 defeat against Kent Denver on the 15th.
