Basketball Recap: Discovery Canyon Comes Up Short

Discovery Canyon lost against Air Academy back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Discovery Canyon Thunder were dealt a 74-39 defeat at the hands of the Air Academy Kadets. While losing is never fun, the Thunder can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 112th, while the Kadets are ranked fifth).

Despite the loss, Discovery Canyon saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Dillan McComb went 6 of 13 on her way to 12 points and five boards.

Even though they lost, Discovery Canyon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in five consecutive contests.

Air Academy's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Lydia Flowers, who almost dropped a double-double on 21 points and nine rebounds. Flowers continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Tatyonna Brown was another key player, dropping a double-double on 13 points and 17 boards.

Discovery Canyon's defeat dropped their record down to 11-8. As for Air Academy, they pushed their record up to 19-0 with the victory, which was their 17th straight on the road dating back to last season.

Discovery Canyon didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 53-26 win against Mesa Ridge on the 8th. As for Air Academy, they will challenge Cheyenne Mountain at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Air Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.7 points per game this season.
