Highland hasn't had much luck against Lowell recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Trojans will host the Red Devils at 6:45 p.m. Highland is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.9 runs per game this season.
Having struggled with three losses in a row, Highland turned things around against Hammond Central on Wednesday. They blew past the Wolves 17-1. While the Trojans didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Alyssa Niemann made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Highland got a massive performance out of Hailey Thomas, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one triple. That's the most RBI Thomas has posted since back in March. Jordan Steele was another key player, going a perfect 5-for-5 with four runs, two RBI, and one double.
Highland always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .684. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hammond Central only posted an OBP of .105.
Meanwhile, Lowell entered their tilt with Kankakee Valley on Tuesday with five consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with six. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 5-4 W against the Kougars. Five seems to be a good number for the Red Devils as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Like Highland, Lowell also got a great game from a two-way player: Olivia Fuentes. She struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits. Fuentes was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Lowell let Preslee Hill and Peyton Lonardi run wild. Hill went 2-for-3 with two runs, while Lonardi went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double.
Lowell's victory bumped their record up to 8-4. As for Highland, their win bumped their record up to 8-5.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. Highland has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 13.3 hits per game. However, it's not like Lowell struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.8 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Highland might still be hurting after the 9-3 defeat they got from Lowell in their previous meeting back in April. Will the Trojans have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more softball content.
