Colorado high school girls soccer playoff push down to final few days

Regular season ends this weekend, with the postseason set to open up next week; 4A Jeffco League, 3A Metro League have a firm grip on RPI standings.

With only a few days remaining in the girls soccer regular season, teams are doing what they can to make that last-minute push toward a league title, or perhaps even a postseason berth.

Across the state's four classifications, only three teams didn't have a loss going into Tuesday. Two of those teams are sitting with perfect 12-0 records — Rampart (Colorado Springs) in Class 5A and Kent Denver (Englewood) in 3A. Regis Jesuit (Aurora) was 8-0-2 going into Tuesday night's Continental League tilt with ThunderRidge (Highlands Ranch), with defending 5A state champion Grandview (Aurora) waiting May 2.

For Kent Denver, which lost in a shootout to Jefferson Academy in the 3A state title game last May, the final week of the season presents some challenges of its own. Second-ranked Colorado Academy (Denver) — coming off a victory over Grandview — hosts the Sun Devils on Thursday in a rematch of a 2018 state semifinal contest. Kent Denver visits 4A Holy Family (Broomfield) to close out the regular season.

Then there is Rampart, which is currently second to Regis Jesuit in the 5A RPI standings. The Rams play three games in the first four days of May, with only one coming against an opponent with a winning record (The Classical Academy (Colorado Springs) on Wednesday).

Rampart was 13-3 a year ago, losing to Fossil Ridge in the first round of the 5A state playoffs. The Rams were young in 2018 though, with a strong nucleus of sophomores who returned to the program. Rampart has outscored its opponents 45-4 through 12 games, with 10 players scoring at least two goals. Junior Jordan Garrett leads the team with eight goals and 12 assists.

Playing behind a strong defensive backfield, junior goalkeeper Katlyn Rosenbaum has allowed four goals.
With the regular season wrapping up this weekend, the postseason gets underway next Tuesday for 5A and 2A and Wednesday for 4A and 3A.

Here is a quick look at each of the four classifications going into the final week:

Class 5A
Last spring, it was Grandview laying claim to its third title in four years with a 1-0 overtime victory over Broomfield. Those two teams are currently ranked 1-2 in the most recent 5A CHSAANow.com poll, and are in the top four in RPI. Both teams were handed losses last week, with the Wolves falling to 3A Colorado Academy and Broomfield suffering its first defeat against Legacy (Broomfield). The Eagles (11-1, 7-1 in Front Range League) still have to get past the two teams joining them at the top of the league standings this week in Fossil Ridge (Fort Collins) and Fairview (Boulder). Those three teams, along with Rocky Mountain, are all in the Top 10 in RPI. ... Grandview (10-2-1, 5-0-1) can wrap up the Centennial League crown with a victory over 4A No. 2 Mullen (Denver) on Wednesday. … The 5A Jeffco League title will also be decided Wednesday when No. 7 Columbine (Littleton) (10-3-1, 7-0) takes on No. 10 Chatfield (Littleton) (11-1-1, 6-0-1) at Lakewood Memorial Field. The Rebels are eighth in RPI and the Chargers are 11th, making Wednesday's contest a huge one for both sides. … Fruita Monument (Fruita) (10-3, 7-0) already has wrapped up the Southwestern League crown, but the Wildcats have a big game Thursday against Grand Junction. The Tigers are 15th in RPI and could move up with a victory over their league rival.

Class 4A
The top of the 4A Jeffco League standings is a bit more muddled after Evergreen and D'Evelyn (Denver) played to a 1-all tie April 25. The Cougars (9-3-1, 4-0-1) are tied for second in RPI with Wheat Ridge, while D'Evelyn (9-1-2, 3-0-2) owns the top spot in RPI and the 4A poll. Wheat Ridge (11-2-1, 3-2-1) was hurt by a 1-0 loss to Green Mountain (Lakewood) last week but is still in good shape. … The Pikes Peak League currently has spots 6-8 in RPI, with Air Academy (US Air Force Academy), Palmer Ridge (Monument) and Sand Creek (Colorado Springs) all looking to enter the postseason with momentum. The Kadets (9-4-1, 5-0-1) have defeated both squads by 4-1 margins, and would clinch the league crown outright with a victory over Lewis-Palmer (Monument) on Tuesday. Palmer Ridge (11-2-1, 5-1) has won seven in a row since the loss to Air Academy, defeating Sand Creek and Pueblo Centennial (Pueblo) (No. 4 in RPI) along the way. … Speaking of Centennial (12-2, 4-0 in South Central League), it could secure the league crown with a victory over Pueblo South (Pueblo,) on Tuesday. … Mullen (Denver) is fifth in RPI after nearly missing the playoffs a year ago. The Mustangs were the 29th seed but upset No. 4 D'Evelyn in the first round. … Mead (Longmont) (11-2, 7-0 in Tri-Valley League) will play for the league title against 5A Windsor (9-3, 6-0) on Thursday. The Wizards are in their first year in 5A after winning the 4A state title last spring. … Battle Mountain (Edwards) (12-1, 10-0) has already won the 4A Western Slope League title. The Huskies are ninth in RPI and own a victory over Evergreen.

Class 3A
Like the 4A Jeffco League, the 3A Metro League occupies the top three positions in RPI and the 3A poll. Kent Denver, Colorado Academy and Jefferson Academy (Broomfield) are ranked 1-2-3 in both, though that will likely change after the Sun Devils and Mustangs meet up. Defending state champion Jefferson Academy (10-1-1, 6-1) is the only team to defeat Colorado Academy this season. The Jaguars played SkyView Academy (Highlands Ranch) (fifth in RPI) on Tuesday. Seven of the top 10 teams in RPI are from the Metro League. … Aspen (11-2, 7-0 in 3A Western Slope League) already claimed the league crown. The Skiers are fourth in RPI, and have won nine in a row. ... Salida, sixth in RPI, may share the Tri Peaks West crown with Manitou Springs after the two teams played to a 2-2- tie April 18. Each team has one league game remaining. … Eagle Ridge Academy (Brighton) (11-1, 5-0 in Confluence League) has won nine in a row. The team's only loss was a 1-0 setback to St. Mary's Academy (Englewood), and the Warriors are ninth in RPI. … Liberty Common (Fort Collins) could close the door in the Patriot League with a victory over Resurrection Christian (Loveland) on Tuesday. … DSST: Stapleton (Denver) and Middle Park (Granby), both undefeated in Frontier League play, matched up for the league crown Tuesday.

Class 2A
Denver Christian (Denver) (11-2), despite a loss to Dawson School (Lafayette) on April 18, is ranked first in RPI and in the 2A poll. The Crusaders moved ahead after Dawson (7-2) dropped games to 3A Liberty Common (Fort Collins) and Peak to Peak last week. … The defending state champions are still second in RPI and dominated 2A's third-ranked team, Loveland Classical (Loveland), 9-0 earlier in the season. … Speaking of the Lions (12-1), they are playing their first full year as a CHSAA-sanctioned program. Senior Molly Miller has scored 39 goals for the team. … Rye is ranked fourth in the 2A poll but is 12th in RPI. The Thunderbolts (8-4) lost to fifth-ranked Fountain Valley (Colorado Springs) (10-2) twice, and the Danes are fifth in RPI. … Colorado Rocky Mountain (Carbondale) is enjoying its best season. The Oysters (8-2) closed the regular season with seven consecutive victories. … Telluride, Crested Butte and Del Norte are in the top nine in RPI out of Region 4. The Titans were poised to all but lock up the league title if they could get past Del Norte on Tuesday.
