In just his second season at Westlake (Austin, Texas), head coach Todd Dodge led the Chaparrals to the Class 6A Division I championship game.

If Friday’s season opener is any indicator, Westlake is ready to take the next step for a truly special 2016 campaign.

The Chaparrals knocked off defending state and national champion Katy 32-29 in front of over 10,000 fans in Austin, snapping a 16-game win streak for the Houston-area school. Katy did not allow more than 20 points in any game during the 2015 season and hadn’t surrendered 32 or more since December of 2012.

Clinging to a 25-22 lead with under three minutes to go, Westlake quarterback Sam Ehlinger – a Texas Longhorns commitment – authored the Russell Wilson-inspired #MPTopPlay seen in the video above.

Dodge is beginning to pile up an impressive list of wins at Westlake, beating his former school Carroll (Southlake) and perennial power Allen in 2015 to go along with Katy. The Chaparrals have an interesting out-of-state tussle next week with Liberty (Henderson, Nev.).
