Softball Game Preview: Capitan Tigers vs. Mescalero Apache Chiefs

For the first time this season, Capitan will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will square off against the Mescalero Apache Chiefs at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Capitan has three straight wins, Mescalero Apache has four straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Capitan's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Saturday. They blew past Hatch Valley 9-0. The Tigers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three matches by nine runs or more this season.

Hatch Valley's batters probably weren't too happy with Faith Roper, who pitched a no hitter and racked up 12 Ks (she gave up a single walk). Roper has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Reyanne Harris was a standout: she got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Kaycee Storms was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.

Meanwhile, Mescalero Apache fell victim to St. Michael's and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They came up short against the Horsemen, falling 17-0. The contest marked the first time this season in which the Chiefs were not able to get on the board.

Mescalero Apache's loss dropped their record down to 2-8. As for Capitan, the victory got them back to even at 4-4.

Capitan couldn't quite finish off Mescalero Apache in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 and fell 8-6. Can the Tigers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
