Basketball Recap: Salida Takes a Loss

Salida was the 63-13 winner over St. Mary when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Salida Spartans were just a bucket shy of victory on Saturday and fell 77-76 to the St. Mary's Pirates. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Thursday (62), the Spartans still had to take the loss.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead St. Mary's to victory, but perhaps none more so than Bret Stewart, who almost dropped a double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jeremiah Starr, who went 7-for-12 en route to 19 points.

Salida's defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 11-6. As for St. Mary's, their record now sits at 11-7.

Looking ahead, Salida will square off against Florence at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for St. Mary's, they will take on Lamar at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. St. Mary's knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past four matches -- so hopefully Lamar likes a good challenge.
