Softball Recap: South Pontotoc Drops Season-High Score on Starkville

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask South Pontotoc). Everything went their way against the Starkville Yellowjackets on Friday as the South Pontotoc Cougars made off with a 27-18 win. Considering the Cougars have won five contests by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Haylee Phillips was a standout: she got on base in five of her six plate appearances with five RBI, three runs, and one stolen base. That stolen base was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Blakelee Dollins, who scored three runs while going 4-for-5.

South Pontotoc kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 21 hits. They got seven more hits than Starkville's also-impressive total of 14.

South Pontotoc's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-3. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 11.6 runs. As for Starkville, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-6.

Looking ahead, South Pontotoc will face off against Caledonia at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Starkville, they will challenge Nanih Waiya at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Nanih Waiya has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.1 runs per game on average), something Starkville will no doubt try to take advantage of.
