Basketball Recap: Cheraw Takes a Loss

If Cheraw was riding high fresh off their 67-36 takedown of Buford on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Cheraw Braves took a hard 62-43 fall against the McBee Panthers on Saturday. The Braves were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Panthers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.

Despite the loss, Cheraw still got an impressive performance from TJ Ford, who went 9 of 16 on his way to 23 points and three steals. The dominant performance gave Ford a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of De'Shaun Drake, who posted 11 points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Cheraw smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in nine consecutive games dating back to last season.

McBee was led to victory by Jakari Holloman and Hayden Griggs. Holloman went 9 of 16 on his way to 21 points and six assists, while Griggs went 8 of 9 on his way to 17 points and six boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyrek Wright, who had six points and seven assists.

Cheraw has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-4 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.3 points per game. As for McBee, their record now sits at 7-1.

Cheraw wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 71-46 loss against Hartsville on the 23rd. As for McBee, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 67-53 defeat against Westminster Catawba Christian on the 23rd.
