Preview: Canutillo Eagles vs. Palo Duro Dons
The Canutillo Eagles will look to defend their home field on Friday against the Palo Duro Dons at 2:00 p.m. Canutillo will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak.
Canutillo can now show off six landslide victories after their most recent game on Thursday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat El Paso 62-0 on the road. Given Canutillo's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 384th, while El Paso is ranked 1030th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Canutillo got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jeremiah Knox out in front who threw for 92 yards and two touchdowns while completing 100% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. The team also got some help courtesy of Rene Huerta, who rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries.
Meanwhile, Palo Duro had to endure a three-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They claimed a resounding 41-14 victory over Plainview at home.
One reason for the win was Palo Duro's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. Tye'leik Foster was especially locked on to Plainview's QB and sacked him twice.
Canutillo's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-2. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 37.0 points per game. As for Palo Duro, their victory bumped their record up to 4-5.
Everything came up roses for Canutillo against Palo Duro in their previous meeting back in November of 2022 as the team secured a 28-0 win. Will Canutillo repeat their success, or does Palo Duro have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
