Basketball Recap: Layla Hester Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Covenant Christian + How To Watch

While Vina didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-25), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They blew past the Covenant Christian Eagles 49-28 on Saturday. The Red Devils not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since November 16, 2024 (when they won 54-30).

Vina's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Layla Hester led the charge by putting up ten points along with six assists and five rebounds. Hester has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last 32 times she's played. Cecilia Rowbottom was another key player, dropping a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards.

Vina smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive boards in four consecutive matchups.

Vina has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-2 record this season. As for Covenant Christian, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-4.

Looking ahead, Vina will take on Fayette County in a tournament on Saturday. As for Covenant Christian, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Danville at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. The Eagles will be up against the Hawks' rather soft defense (which has allowed 50 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
