MaxPreps National Player of the Year
Nneka Ogwumike, Cy-Fair (Cypress, Texas)
First Team (Listed Alphabetically)
Heather Buck
6-4/Senior/Forward
Stonington (Stonington, Conn.)
Headed To: Connecticut
Buck will only be moving 35 miles next fall to enroll at the University of Connecticut – a good thing considering the amount of hardware she will be hauling after a decorated four-year run at Stonington. Buck won a state title as a sophomore, twice earned state POY honors and was a three-time first team All-State selection. As a senior, Buck averaged 26.4 points and 15.8 rebounds per game.
Elena Delle Donne
6-4/Senior/Guard-Forward
Ursuline Academy (Wilmington, Del.)
Headed To: Connecticut
Had she not missed almost half of her senior season due to mononucleosis, Delle Donne would have been a lock for Player of the Year honors. A three-time POY in Delaware and five-time All-State selection, the Connecticut-bound star averaged 29 points and 11 boards per game, leading Ursuline Academy to its fourth state title in the past five seasons. Delle Donne finished her career with a state record 2,818 points.
Skylar Diggins
5-9/Junior/Guard
Washington (South Bend, Ind.)
Headed To: Undecided
A scorer extraordinaire with all four of this year’s Final Four participants in hot pursuit, mark Diggins down as the early leader for Player of the Year honors in 2008-2009. Diggins poured in 29.5 points per game for Class 4A runner-up Washington. The Panthers’ three-year record with Diggins on the floor is 76-6.
Nneka Ogwumike
6-2/Senior/Forward
Cy-Fair (Cypress, Texas)
Headed To: Stanford
The 2007-2008 MaxPreps National Player of the Year, Ogwumike posted 18.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game while leading Cy-Fair to Texas’ 5A state title. The Bobcats went 73-1 over the past two seasons with Ogwumike in the lineup, with their only two losses of this year coming while the Stanford-bound forward was still participating in the state volleyball tournament. April Sykes
6-0/Senior/Guard-Forward
East Oktibbeha (Crawford, Miss.)
Headed To: Rutgers
Schools the size of East Oktibbeha High (161 students in grades 9-12) don’t often produce players like April Sykes. A three-time MaxPreps All-American, Sykes earned Miss Basketball honors in Mississippi this year after pouring in 25.5 points per game to go along with 10.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists. The future Scarlet Knight led her school to three-straight state championship game appearances with a title in 2007.
Second Team (Listed Alphabetically)
Alyssia Brewer
6-3/Senior/Forward
Sapulpa (Sapulpa, Okla.)
Headed To: Tennessee
Oklahoma’s consensus player of the year averaged 21.6 points, 15.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.1 blocks per game while leading her Chieftains to a 27-2 record and the state finals. The future Lady Vol posted 23 double-doubles and helped Sapulpa compile a 54-3 record over the past two seasons.
Becky Burke
5-11/Senior/Guard
Abington Heights (Clarks Summit, Pa.)
Headed To: South Carolina
Pennsylvania’s Class AAAA Player of the Year willed her Abington Heights squad to the state tournament, scoring 26 points per game – including 30 in an impressive January victory over New York power Christ the King. Burke will head to South Carolina after racking up 2,162 points in her career and leading the Comets to four-straight 20-win seasons.
Jasmine Dixon
5-10/Senior/Guard-Forward
Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.)
Headed To: Rutgers
With as many as seven Division I prospects on the Jackrabbit roster, head coach Carl Buggs didn’t need Dixon to post gaudy numbers, but her impact was undeniable. The Rutgers-bound senior tallied 14.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.2 steals per game for a 31-2 squad that captured California’s Division I state title.
Brooklyn Pope
6-2/Senior/Forward
Dunbar (Fort Worth, Texas)
Headed To: Rutgers
Dunbar wasn’t able to capture its third 4A state title in four years, but don’t blame Pope. An All-Area selection in the talent-rich Metroplex, Pope averaged 24.9 points and 12.6 rebounds per game. The powerful forward earned District 7-4A MVP honors and earned a trip to Milwaukee for the McDonald’s All-American Game.
Shekinna Stricklen
6-2/Senior/Forward
Morrilton (Morrilton, Ark.)
Headed To: Tennessee
Stricklen capped her storied career at Morrilton by providing a valiant, 45-point, 16-rebound performance in a loss to Fairview in the state’s 5A title game. Averaging 24.1 points and 14.2 rebounds per game, Stricklen helped the Devil Dogs compile a 29-3 record.
Third Team (Listed Alphabetically)
Sarah Boothe
6-5/Senior/Forward
Warren (Gurnee, Ill.)
Headed To: Stanford
The Chicago Tribune’s Illinois Ms. Basketball was a double-double machine, averaging 20.5 points, 11.2 rebounds and 4.1 blocks per game. Boothe’s play propelled Warren to a 28-3 record and the state sectionals. Boothe’s most impressive performance may have come in the state regional finals, where she posted 29 points, 19 rebounds and three blocks in a 60-31 win over Waukegan.
Brittney Griner
6-7/Junior/Forward
Nimitz (Houston, Texas)
Headed To: Baylor
Griner grabbed the nation’s attention when footage of her dunking effortlessly ran on ESPN’s SportsCenter. But the Houston-area star can do more than dunk. Griner piled up 24.6 points, 12.3 rebounds and 5.9 blocks per game for a 27-8 Nimitz squad. Already committed to Baylor despite being a junior, Griner recorded four triple-doubles, and just missed a quadruple-double when she went for 27 points, 16 rebounds, 13 blocks and eight assists against Westside Feb. 11.
Tayler Hill
5-11/Junior/Guard
Minneapolis South (Minneapolis, Minn.)
Headed To: Undecided
Just a junior and already a four-time All-Metro selection by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune (do the math), Hill added Associated Press state player of the year honors to her resume this winter. In leading South to Minnesota’s 4A state title game, Hill posted averages of 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.4 steals and 2.6 assists per game.
Destini Hughes
5-10/Senior/Guard
Kennedale (Kennedale, Texas)
Headed To: LSU
Yet another Texan, Hughes earned Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 3A Player of the Year honors and joined Brooklyn Pope on the Dallas Morning News All-Area team after leading Kennedale to the state title game. Hughes averaged 21.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.9 steals and 5.4 assists per game for the 30-5 Wildcats.
Kathleen Scheer
6-2/Senior/Guard-Forward
New Haven (New Haven, Mo.)
Headed To: Duke
MaxPreps’ Missouri Player of the Year did it all for New Haven and did it well. At one time or another, Scheer played all five positions this year for the Shamrocks, averaging 28.2 points and 12.9 rebounds per outing. In her four-year career at New Haven, Scheer totaled over 2,300 points, 1,300 rebounds and 600 blocked shots.
Honorable Mention (Listed Alphabetically)
Anne Marie Armstrong
6-3/Junior/Forward
Wesleyan (Norcross, Ga.)
Headed To: Undecided
Georgia’s Miss Basketball is emerging as one of the more successful all-around athletes in the country, compiling five state titles already in basketball and volleyball, and adding an individual title in the high jump as a sophomore. Armstrong averaged 19 points and eight rebounds for the 30-3, state champion Wolves.
LaShondra Barrett
6-0/Senior/Forward
Murrah (Jackson, Miss.)
Headed To: LSU
The backbone of back-to-back 5A state championship teams, Barrett earned first team All-State honors by putting up 18.0 points and 8.4 rebounds per night.
Ashley Corral
5-9/Senior/Guard
Prairie (Brush Prairie, Wash.)
Headed To: USC
Corral helped four Prairie teams reach state and finished as Washington’s career leader in state tournament scoring (247 points in 16 games). The USC-bound guard popped in 19 per night for the 4A semifinalist Falcons as a senior.
Tia Gibbs
5-9/Senior/Guard
Butler (Louisville, Ky.)
Headed To: Vanderbilt
Kentucky’s Miss Basketball averaged 21.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 3.9 assists in leading Butler to the state’s single-class state championship.
Amber Gray
6-1/Senior/Forward
Lakota West (West Chester, Ohio)
Headed To: Tennessee
Led the Firebirds to Ohio’s Division I title game with her 18.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, earning unanimous acclaim as the Buckeye State’s best.
Tiffany Hayes
6-0/Senior/Guard-Forward
Winter Haven (Winter Haven, Fla.)
Headed To: Connecticut
The two-time Florida 5A Player of the Year led Winter Haven to the Class 5A title game with her 18.7 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.
Bonae Holston
5-11/Senior/Guard-Forward
Heritage (Newport News, Va.)
Headed To: North Carolina State
Playing on a team loaded with Division I talent, Holston averaged 16.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game to lead her Hurricanes to a 30-2 record and Virginia AAA title.
Jazmine Jackson
5-9/Senior/Guard-Forward
Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco, Calif.)
Headed To: Pepperdine
The leader of the nation’s top-ranked squad averaged 12.2 points per game and was named City Player of the Year by the San Francisco Examiner for the third-straight year.
Glory Johnson
6-2/Senior/Forward
Webb School (Knoxville, Tenn.)
Headed To: Tennessee
Tennessee’s Miss Basketball and two-time Gatorade Player of the Year put up over 19 points and 10 rebounds per game for Division II-AA runner-up.
Shenise Johnson
5-11/Senior/Forward
Rush-Henrietta (Henrietta, N.Y.)
Headed To: Miami
New York’s Miss Basketball capped an incredible run at the Rochester-area school by leading the Royal Comets to a 25-3 record and the Class AA state championship game. Headed for Miami, Johnson averaged 23.6 points, 17.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game.
Miriam McKenzie
5-8/Senior/Guard
Oakland Mills (Columbia, Md.)
Headed To: Loyola (Md.)
McKenzie had an unexpectedly huge year, averaging 28 points and over 13 rebounds per game for a formerly-downtrodden Oakland Mills program. The Scorpions went 18-5 and reached the regional playoffs behind McKenzie’s spectacular senior campaign.
Samantha Prahalis
5-7/Senior/Guard
Commack (Commack, N.Y.)
Headed To: Ohio State
Sixth-year starter and first team All-State selection taking her 30.1 points, 7.9 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game to Columbus.
Monique Reid
6-1/Senior/Forward
Fern Creek (Louisville, Ky.)
Headed To: Louisville
First team All-State selection has put up monster numbers the past two years, averaging 31.6 points and 19.2 rebounds per game this year. Exploded for 55 points against Warren East in early February.
Tierra Ruffin-Pratt
5-10/Junior/Guard
T.C. Williams (Alexandria, Va.)
Headed To: Undecided
Expect to see Ruffin-Pratt in the top 15 a year from now after pouring in 25.5 points per night and leading Williams to a 22-0 mark – only to dislocate her shoulder and watch her teammates bow out of the state playoffs from the bench.
She’la White
5-6/Senior/Guard
Norfolk Collegiate (Norfolk, Va.)
Headed to: North Carolina
Should be fun to watch White and her 23 points, 5.1 assists and 2.6 steals per game join a Tar Heel backcourt that already includes former MaxPreps All-Americans Cetera DeGraffenred and Italee Lucas.
