Basketball Recap: Southwood's Victory on Friday Extends Winning Streak to Two

Maconaquah came into Friday's game looking for another win against Southwood, but Bryce Wilcox wouldn't allow it. The Southwood Knights came out on top in a nail-biter against the Maconaquah Braves on Friday, sneaking past 78-75 thanks to Wilcox, who went 12-for-22 on his way to 29 points along with eight rebounds and three blocks. That makes it four consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of Southwood's points.

Dalton Barney was another key player, putting up five points in addition to 17 assists and seven boards. He also grabbed four steals, which is notable because Southwood is undefeated when he posts at least three steals, but 5-8 otherwise.

Maconaquah lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Fuddy Kile, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in assists (eight). Another player making a difference was AJ Kelly, who went 6-for-11 en route to 16 points and six boards.

The victory made it two in a row for Southwood and bumps their season record up to 9-8. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 72.5 points over those games. As for Maconaquah, their loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 5-1 and their overall record down to 13-5.

Southwood didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 63-52 defeat against Madison-Grant on the 15th. As for Maconaquah, they will venture away from home to take on Northfield at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Maconaquah knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past four contests -- so hopefully Northfield likes a good challenge.
