Softball Game Preview: Lawndale Cardinals vs. Hoover Tornados

The Lawndale Cardinals will hit the road for the first time this season to face off against the Hoover Tornados at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Lawndale is headed into Tuesday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 19th straight game dating back to last season on Thursday. They came up short against Bishop Conaty-Loretto, falling 20-0.

Lawndale saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Celia Ponce, who went 1-for-2 with one double.

Meanwhile, Hoover made easy work of St. Mary's Academy on Saturday and carried off a 15-5 win. The Tornados might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by eight runs or more this season.

Evelyn Ortiz was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. What's more, she gave up only two walks, the fewest she's had since back in April of 2024. She was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. What's more, she posted three hits, the most she's had since back in March of 2024.

In other batting news, Hannah Parker was a standout: she scored four runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-3. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now stole two or more in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Sophia Hernandez, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.

Hoover is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 9 runs. Lawndale's loss dropped their record down to 0-2.
