Recap: East Central Hornets vs. Churchill Chargers

The East Central Hornets and the Churchill Chargers squared off in some playoff action on Tuesday, but sadly the East Central Hornets had to settle for second. They were the victim of a rough 62-36 defeat at the hands of the Chargers. East Central was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Churchill apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in November of 2023.

Leah Mitchell and A'maya Holton certainly did their best on Tuesday to avoid the loss. Mitchell scored 12 points along with four steals, while Holton scored nine points along with seven steals and six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Emery Espinoza, who scored seven points.

East Central struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Churchill posted 15 assists.

Churchill's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Rakiya Nelson led the charge by scoring 19 points. Another player making a difference was Ava Fernandez, who scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and five assists.

East Central has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 24-13 record this season. As for Churchill, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 27-10.

East Central does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Churchill will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against Vista Ridge at 8:00 p.m. on February 16th. Hopefully Churchill focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Tuesday.
