Football Recap: Santa Margarita Falls to Mission Viejo in First Game of Season

Santa Margarita unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They fell 7-3 to the Mission Viejo Diablos on Friday. The Eagles have struggled against the Diablos recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.

Trace Johnson threw for 205 yards on 20 of 29 attempts. Luke Gazzaniga was his top target, picking up 67 receiving yards. On the ground, Jaion Smith rushed for 56 yards.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mission Viejo to victory, but perhaps none more so than Luke Fahey, who threw for 179 yards and one TD while completing 75% of his passes.

Looking ahead, Santa Margarita will host Centennial at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Mission Viejo, they will head out to take on St. Paul at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
