Preview: Chaparral Wolverines vs. Mountain Vista Golden Eagles

The Chaparral Wolverines will stay at home for another game and welcome the Mountain Vista Golden Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on January 19th. Hopefully Chaparral is not getting complacent, as they presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Mountain Vista in Colorado (Chaparral is ranked 25th, while Mountain Vista is ranked 89th).

Last Tuesday, Chaparral earned a 44-32 win over Castle View. The victory was just what Chaparral needed coming off of a 81-35 defeat in their prior contest.

Chaparral found their leader in underclassman Lauren Thompson, who scored nine points along with seven rebounds and five assists. Thompson is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Reagan Lentell was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with eight rebounds and two steals.

Meanwhile, Mountain Vista's recent rough patch got a bit rougher last Thursday after their third straight loss. They lost to Castle View on the road by a decisive 51-36 margin. Mountain Vista found out winning isn't easy when you don't work as a unit and post 12 fewer assists than your opponent.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Kennedy Spellman, who scored 14 points along with two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Grace Roscoe, who scored seven points along with 17 rebounds.

Chaparral's win bumped their record up to 9-4. As for Mountain Vista, they now have a losing record at 5-6.

Friday's contest is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Chaparral have been dynamite from deep this season, having only nailed 32.1% of their threes per game. It's a different story for Mountain Vista, though, as they've only drained 34.8% of their threes per game this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Chaparral came up short against Mountain Vista when the teams last played back in January of 2023, falling 39-31. Will Chaparral have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more basketball content.
