Softball Preview: Houghton Gremlins vs. Ishpeming Hematites
Houghton and Ishpeming are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2018, but likely not for long. The Houghton Gremlins will head out on the road to face off against the Ishpeming Hematites at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Houghton is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last seven games.
Houghton is hoping to deliver their fans another blowout on Tuesday, just like they did against Lake Linden-Hubbell (and have done all season long). Everything went Houghton's way against Lake Linden-Hubbell on Saturday as Houghton made off with a 10-3 victory. That's two games straight that Houghton has won by exactly seven runs.
Meanwhile, Ishpeming fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Calumet on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Copper Kings by a score of 15-14. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Monday (13), Ishpeming still had to take the loss.
Kadie Kaukola made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored four runs and stole three bases while going 4-for-6. The team also got some help courtesy of Ava Jo Hares, who scored a run while getting on base in four of her six plate appearances.
Houghton pushed their record up to 10-3 with that win, which was their fifth straight at home. As for Ishpeming, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last seven matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 12-10 record this season.
Houghton took their victory against Ishpeming in their previous meeting back in May of 2023 by a conclusive 15-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for Houghton since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
