Basketball Recap: Las Cruces Falls Short Against Ranked Mayfield

On Thursday, Las Cruces faced Mayfield in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Las Cruces Bulldawgs fell just short of the Mayfield Trojans by a score of 34-32. The Bulldawgs have struggled against the Trojans recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

Las Cruces' defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sofia Herrera, who posted six points in addition to eight rebounds and three steals. That's the most boards Herrera has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Danae Pacheco, who had ten points.

Mayfield's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Lorrena Viarreal led the charge by going 6 for 11 to rack up 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jazlene Ruiz, who went 6 of 11 on her way to 12 points and eight rebounds.

Las Cruces' loss dropped their record down to 13-8. As for Mayfield, the win was the 17th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-3.

Las Cruces wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 54-10 victory against Gadsden on the 10th. As for Mayfield, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 39-36 win against Centennial on the 10th.
