Baseball Recap: Garden Valley Takes a Loss

Garden Valley extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 2-8 in the process. They fell 10-5 to the Idaho City Wildcats. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Wildcats this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 13-2 last Monday.

Jayce Rogers was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with four stolen bases and one RBI. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played.

As for Idaho City, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-14. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for their hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

On Idaho City's side, Stace Martiny was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Those nine strikeouts gave Martiny a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his five plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Trey Martiny, who went 3-for-5 with four stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Idaho City's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 3-1 (and 2-13 when he doesn't). Gabe Sheirbon also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Garden Valley will square off against rival Glenns Ferry at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Idaho City is set to challenge their familiar foe Rimrock at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
