Football Recap: Central Catholic Buttons vs. Gonzales Apaches

Central Catholic took care of business in their home opener (and then some) on Friday. Everything went their way against the Gonzales Apaches as they made off with a 34-12 victory. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Buttons also won the last time the pair played back in August of 2024.

Antonio Guevarra went supernova, picking up 144 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He got the majority of those receiving yards when he pulled down a pass and took off for a gain of 75 yards. Another player making a difference was Matthew McClenan, who rushed for 37 yards.

On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Central Catholic's defense and their 3.5 sacks. Zach Mehdi refused to say out of the backfield, picking up 1.5 sacks all by himself. Central Catholic got some further help from Mehdi: he picked up 1.5 sacks, made eight total tackles (3.5 for loss), and defended one pass.

Looking ahead, Central Catholic will challenge Southside at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Gonzales, they will square off against Hallettsville at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
