Preview: Red Mesa Redskins vs. Whitehorse Raiders
The Red Mesa Redskins will be playing at home against the Whitehorse Raiders at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Red Mesa has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
Last Thursday, Red Mesa took their contest at home with ease, bagging a 61-28 victory over Greyhills Academy.
Red Mesa got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jonah Herbert out in front who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds. The contest was Herbert's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Dakota Loucks was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with 8 rebounds and 5 steals.
Meanwhile, it's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 80-44, which was the final score in Whitehorse's tilt against Shiprock on Saturday. Whitehorse was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 44-20.
Despite the defeat, Whitehorse had strong showings from Lyric Phillips, who scored 18 points, and Dominic Dance, who scored 12 points. Phillips scored a full 40.9% of Whitehorse's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Their wins bumped Red Mesa to 3-1 and Greyhills Academy to 1-1.
Keep an eye on the arc in Tuesday's game: Red Mesa have been dynamite from deep this season, having made 39.8% of their threes per game. It's a different story for Whitehorse, though, as they've only made 0% of theirs this season. Given Red Mesa's sizeable advantage in that area, Whitehorse will need to find a way to close that gap. Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
Red Mesa came up short against Whitehorse in their previous meeting back in January of 2020, falling 50-40. Thankfully for Red Mesa, T'kenya Yazzie (who scored 21 points) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
