Son of Tennessee legend making his own name in North Carolina.
Tennessee Volunteers legend and 1994 NFL first round draft pick Heath Shuler is still the standard for small school quarterbacks from the state of North Carolina, although his son might change that by the time his career is over.
A Parade Magazine All-American while at Class 1A
Swain County (Bryson City), Heath Shuler threw for 7,045 career yards and 73 touchdowns including 3,626 yards and 43 touchdowns as a senior in 1991.
Fast forward to 2018 and
Navy Shuler is lighting it up at
Christ School (Arden), a NCISAA Division II school. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior has thrown for 2,893 yards in just eight games with 34 touchdowns.
Shuler's total ranks No. 4 in the nation according to the MaxPreps leaderboards and leads all of North Carolina.
His best game of the season came in a 66-38 win over Rabun Gap-Nacoochee two weeks ago when he threw for 581 yards and six touchdowns. Last year, Shuler injured his elbow against the same team and missed the Christ School's final four contests.
Navy Shuler, who recently received a Division I offer from Tulane, was the MaxPreps Mid-Atlantic Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 3-9 when he had an eight-touchdown game in a 63-32 win over Robbinsville.
The elder Shuler finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting behind Charlie Ward while playing at Tennessee and was the No. 3 overall pick in the 1994 draft by the Washington Redskins. He played five years in the NFL before embarking on a career as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 2006 to 2013.
Shuler is an assistant coach at Christ School along with his brother Benji, who was a receiver for Heath at Swain County.
