MaxPreps 2013 Baseball Medium Schools All-American Team

Serra slugger Dominic Smith is the MaxPreps Medium Schools Baseball Player of the Year after leading his team to a Southern Section title and a No. 45 national computer rankings spot. He was drafted by the New York Mets.

Considered the top pure hitter in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Selection, Dominic Smith of Serra (Gardena, Calif.) didn't have to wait long to hear his name called on draft night.

Picked No. 11 overall, Smith went to the New York Mets, where he is expected to play either first base or in the outfield. He has already signed a $2.6 million contract and has reported to play in Port St. Lucie, Fla., with the Mets' rookie league affiliate.

Smith has also been chosen as the MaxPreps Medium Schools National Player of the Year after a season in which he led his team to a Southern Section Division 3 championship and batted .493 with 37 RBIs and seven home runs.

Smith, who was also the Southern Section Division 3 MVP and the Torrance Daily Breeze All-Area MVP, edges out fellow Californian Phillip Bickford of Oaks Christian, Josh Van Meter of Norwell (Ossian, Ind.) and Wil Crowe of Pigeon Forge (Tenn.) for the MVP honor.

The MaxPreps Medium Schools All-American Team includes a 30-member first team and a 30-member second team. Players are chosen from schools that participate in state enrollment divisions generally between 1,000 and 2,000 students.
