Basketball Preview: Kennedy Cougars vs. McClatchy Lions
Kennedy and the Lions are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2018, but not for long. The Kennedy Cougars will look to defend their home court on Monday against the McClatchy Lions at 7:30 p.m. Kennedy will be strutting in after a win while the Lions will be coming in after a loss.
Kennedy can finally bid farewell to their four-game losing streak thanks to their game on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 63-42 margin over River City. The win was just what Kennedy needed coming off of a 71-44 loss in their prior game.
Dondre Prothro continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 21 points along with six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jordan Lawrence, who scored nine points along with five steals.
Meanwhile, McClatchy's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their tenth straight loss. They were outmatched by Burbank at home and fell 70-31. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points McClatchy has scored all season.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Vincent Seyford, who scored ten points. Kendall Andrews was another key contributor, scoring six points along with six rebounds.
Kennedy's victory bumped their record up to 14-11. As for McClatchy, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 11 of their last 12 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-19 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Kennedy have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 32.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like McClatchy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 28 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Kennedy beat the Lions 57-48 in their previous matchup back in January. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Andrews, who scored 16 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will Kennedy still be able to contain Andrews? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
