Midway is 0-3 against Coalfield since March of 2018 but things could change on Tuesday. The Green Wave will challenge the Yellow Jackets at 5:00 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Midway gave up the first runs on Monday, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with a 9-6 win over Loudon.
Kiersten Ruffner made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Ruffner was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in doubles (two).
In other batting news, Midway let Chloe Jarnigan and Kyker Johnston run wild. Jarnigan scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4, while Johnston went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one double. The dominant performance also gave Jarnigan a new career-high in doubles (two). Taylor Walker also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Midway kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Coalfield entered their tilt with Webb on Monday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Spartans an 11-0 shutout. Considering the Yellow Jackets have won eight games by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Olivia Laymance made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out ten over six innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Madison Jackson was incredible, firing off two home runs and five RBI while going 3-for-4. Ashton Chamblee was another key player, scoring three runs while going 3-for-4.
Coalfield's record is now 13-2-1. As for Midway, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-11.
Midway suffered a grim 10-1 defeat to Coalfield in their previous meeting back in May of 2018. Can the Green Wave avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
