The Knightstown Panthers will head out to face off against the Cowan Blackhawks at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Knightstown is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.8 runs per game this season.
Knightstown is headed into the contest having just suffered their biggest defeat since May 4, 2024 on Wednesday. They lost 9-2 to Alexandria-Monroe. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Panthers' biggest loss of the season was also their lowest-scoring.
Knightstown saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Braylon Johnson, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, Cowan beat Monroe Central 5-2 on Tuesday. The Blackhawks have beaten the Golden Bears the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Golden Bears has come to flipping the script.
Gentry Groves spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on three hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Jaydon Auker and Luke Garrett did most of the damage at the plate: Auker went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double, while Garrett went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Auker is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged two or more in each of the last three games he's played. Jake Self also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Cowan's win was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-2. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Knightstown, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 7-1.
Both Knightstown and Cowan just can't seem to miss. The Panthers have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.9 hits per game. However, it's not like Cowan struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.4 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Knightstown took their win against Cowan in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 21-5 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
