Baseball Preview: Burroughs Bears vs. St. Anthony Saints
The Burroughs Bears will challenge the St. Anthony Saints at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Burroughs' pitching crew has only allowed 2.6 runs per game this season, so St. Anthony's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Burroughs was handed a ten-run defeat in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-3 win over La Canada. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Bears have posted since March 14th.
Meanwhile, while St. Anthony put up plenty of runs last Wednesday, the same can't be said for Sage Hill. The Saints put the hurt on the Lightning with a sharp 11-0 win. The matchup marked the Saints' most dominant victory of the season.
Not much got past Marc James, who gave up just five hits to keep Sage Hill off the board. James has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, St. Anthony got a big performance out of Anthony Valdez, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI. Those two RBI gave Valdez a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryder Mockridge, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
St. Anthony is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 12 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-5-1 record this season. As for Burroughs, their win bumped their record up to 13-3.
