Softball Recap: Clark Cougars vs. Johnson Jaguars
While Clark couldn't quite beat Johnson on Saturday, the two-point margin was a huge improvement compared to the seven-point defeat they were dealt last Tuesday. The Clark Cougars fell just short of the Johnson Jaguars by a score of 9-7. It was the first time this season that Clark let down their fans at home.
Heaven Villarreal was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Soncia Hughes, who scored two runs while going 2-for-2.
On Johnson's side, Maleena Moreno made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched seven innings while giving up four earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits (she also didn't allow any walks). Moreno has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't pitched less than five innings in four consecutive pitching appearances. Clark's loss ended an eight-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 13-9-1. As for Johnson, they have been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 13 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Clark will face off against Churchill at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Johnson, they will head out on the road to challenge Reagan at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Johnson is coming into the match hot, having won their last four games.
