Two dominant backs in Ja'Kavien Collins and Tyceson Davis are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. After each having a week off, the Leroy Bears and the Elba Tigers will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Leroy will come into the matchup with an undefeated record on the line.
Two weeks ago, everything came up roses for Leroy against Millry as the team secured a 51-14 victory. The result was nothing new for the Bears, who have now won seven games by 27 points or more so far this season.
Leroy found their leader in sophomore Jace Sellers, who threw for 233 yards and four touchdowns on only 13 passes. Joshua Reed was Sellers' top target, picking up 35 receiving yards and one score.
Special teams played a big role in the game for Leroy, adding 15 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Ayden Tolbert, who ran a punt back for a touchdown. Another bright spot was a kickoff return touchdown from him.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Elba). They enjoyed a cozy 47-28 win over Florala two weeks ago. The victory continues a trend for the Tigers in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won six in a row.
Leroy better keep an eye on Reggie Gilbert. He was instrumental in Elba's win, picking up 71 receiving yards and three TDs, while also rushing for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Those three receiving touchdowns gave Gilbert a new career-high.
Elba's run defense was locked in: Florala could only muster 2.7 yards per carry. The Tigers' ground attack was stronger, having averaged 5.4.
Elba's win bumped their record up to 3-7. As for Leroy, their victory bumped their record up to 10-0.
Leroy skirted past Elba 27-24 in their previous meeting back in December of 2023. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was the Tigers' Alvin Henderson, who rushed for 320 yards and three scores while picking up 10.3 yards per carry. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be easier for the Bears to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
