Softball Game Preview: University Prep Jaguars vs. Excelsior Charter Eagles

For the second straight game, University Prep will face off against Excelsior Charter. The Jaguars will square off against the Eagles at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Last Tuesday, it was close, but University Prep sidestepped Excelsior Charter for a 15-14 win.

Breezy (Briseis) Vargas made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over 3.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-5. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Paityn Zimmerman, who went 4-for-5 with one home run, seven RBI, and two runs. Those seven RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Amarie Castro, who scored four runs while going 5-for-5.

University Prep was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .488. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

This is the second loss in a row for Excelsior Charter and nudges their season record down to 6-5-1. Even worse, they were so close both times: the losses came by an average of only 1.5 runs. As for University Prep, their record now sits at 9-3.

Thursday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. University Prep hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .415. However, it's not like Excelsior Charter struggles in that department as they've averaged .370. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
