Baseball Recap: Newark Academy Gets the Win

Newark Academy took a 14-run defeat the last time they faced off against St. Benedict's Prep, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Minutemen had just enough and edged out the Gray Bees 4-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Minutemen have posted since April 30, 2024.

David Guadiane looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2024.

On the hitting side, Ryan Zhu was excellent, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played dating back to last season.

Newark Academy has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 6.5 runs this season. As for St. Benedict's Prep, they now have a losing record of 2-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newark Academy will face off against Cedar Grove at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. As for St. Benedict's Prep, they will venture away from home to take on Caldwell at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Chiefs' pitching crew has only allowed 3.8 runs per game this season, so the Gray Bees' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
