Basketball Recap: Goddard Comes Up Short

Goddard was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 56-41 to the Artesia Bulldogs, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Rockets were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Bulldogs earlier this season, when they won 49-48.

Despite the defeat, Goddard saw an underclassman step up: freshman Jazmin De Leon went 6-for-14 on her way to 17 points and three steals. That's the most points De Leon has posted since back in December of 2024. Aubrie Bolanos was another key player, putting up nine points and five boards.

Even though they lost, Goddard smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in ten consecutive games.

Goddard's loss dropped their record down to 13-13. As for Artesia, their record now sits at 10-15.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Goddard will face off against Portales at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Portales knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past five matches -- so hopefully Goddard likes a good challenge. As for Artesia, they will take on Lovington at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
