Basketball Recap: Mid-Pacific Institute Takes a Loss

Mid-Pacific Institute suffered their closest defeat since November 26, 2023 on Saturday. They fell just short of the El Capitan Gauchos by a score of 57-54. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Owls came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked tenth in Hawaii, while the Gauchos are ranked 347th in California).

When it comes to explaining why Mid-Pacific Institute lost, don't look at Riley Miura. Despite the final result, he went 7 of 13 en route to 16 points and six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Logan Mason, who posted 13 points along with five rebounds and four blocks.

El Capitan's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Diego Ultreras, who had 17 points in addition to seven rebounds and seven steals. Those seven steals gave Ultreras a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Braylen Centeno, who went 9 of 20 on his way to 16 points.

Mid-Pacific Institute's loss dropped their record down to 11-5. As for El Capitan, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-3.

Mid-Pacific Institute didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 57-52 victory against Oakwood on the 26th. As for El Capitan, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 65-54 defeat against Mountain House on the 26th.
