Micah Mason, a 6-foot-2 junior point guard, exploded for 64 points as
Highlands (Natrona Heights, Pa.) defeated Valley (New Kensington, Pa.), 101-83.
It was the second-highest total in the history of Western Pennsylvania (WPIAL) boys basketball history, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The record is 71 by Larry Hardesty of Mohawk (Bessemer, Pa.) and it has stood since 1959.
The Golden Rams' sharpshooter was red-hot, drilling 17-of-19 from the field (7-of-7 from the 3-point line) and 23-of-24 from the free throw line. He also dished out eight assists.
Mason, who faced box-and-one and diamond-and-one defenses, is averaging 36 points. He has scored 40 or more seven times this year. His career point total now stands at 1,426.
His monster effort overshadowed a career-record 45-point performance by Valley senior
