Baseball Recap: Mullen Takes a Loss

Mullen extended their losing streak to six on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 5-9 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 10-8 heartbreaker at the hands of the Smoky Hill Buffaloes. The Mustangs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Buffaloes apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Sam Waller was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI. That double was his first of the season. Griffith Dings was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

As for Smoky Hill, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-10. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since March 13th.

On Smoky Hill's side, Nolan Beckwith looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Beckwith has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Hudson Roth, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Anwyl Gutierrez-Trujillo, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.

Mullen didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 5-2 victory against Mountain View on the 23rd. Hopefully Smoky Hill paid attention to the Mustangs' contest: the next time they hit the field, they'll take on the Mustangs at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.
