Baseball Recap: Whiting Oilers vs. Griffith Panthers

Whiting extended their losing streak to 16 on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 1-18 in the process. They lost 17-0 to the Griffith Panthers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Panthers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 20-1 on Monday.

As for Griffith, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 10-9. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matches by seven runs or more this season.

For Griffith's part, Aiden Anthony was a major factor no matter where he played. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave Anthony a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with four runs and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Griffith's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 6-9 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Jonathan Nevarez was a standout: he went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Pharroh Palmer also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Whiting and Griffith could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Indiana Rankings.
