Union County (Lake Butler, Fla.) captured the lead in the fourth quarter and held on for a 10-7 victory over
Newberry (Fla.) on Saturday. The Fightin' Tigers captured the lead for good when
Carl Alexander kicked a field goal.
After trailing 7-0 at the half, the Panthers went ahead on a touchdown with 10:00 remaining in the third. Union County grabbed hold of the lead when Alexander kicked a field goal with 6:00 to go in the fourth quarter, and never relinquished it.
UC's standout player in the win was
Nate Bridges. The senior wide receiver caught one touchdown. He has now scored two touchdowns on the season.
Herbert played well for Newberry. The senior quarterback kicked one extra point. He has now scored one touchdowns on the season.
NHS's lone touchdown came on a 75-yard kick return by
Ra'kheem Hoyt in the third quarter.
The Lake Butler school had given up an average of 10.1 points prior to the contest. The seven points that the Panthers ended with were well below their average of 30.0 coming into the game.
The Fightin' Tigers also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 14-7.
The defeat comes as a step back for Newberry, which notched a 38-34 victory over Baldwin in its previous outing.
