The Apple Valley Sun Devils will head out on the road to face off against the University Prep Jaguars at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Apple Valley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.1 runs per game this season.
Apple Valley is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Oak Hills just ended the team's nine-game winning streak on Friday. They came up short against the Bulldogs, falling 15-5. Surprisingly, this marked the sixth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor in this series.
Allyssa Purser and Hailey Macias stepped up to the plate in a big way. Purser went 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs, while Macias went a perfect 2-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that Macias has hit this season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for University Prep, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They put the hurt on Victor Valley with a sharp 13-5 win on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Jaguars, who have now won 11 contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Breezy (Briseis) Vargas made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Paityn Zimmerman, who fired off two home runs, five RBI, and three runs while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits she has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Jocelyn Lopez, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and one double.
University Prep hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Victor Valley struck out eight times.
University Prep has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-9 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games. As for Apple Valley, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 9-1 and their overall record down to 16-10-1.
University Prep's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Apple Valley has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 11.9 hits per game. It's a different story for University Prep, though, as they've been averaging 9.1 hits. Given Apple Valley's sizable advantage in that area, the Jaguars will need to find a way to close that gap.
Apple Valley got the 'W' in their previous meeting back in May of 2025 against University Prep by a conclusive 14-4 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Sun Devils since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
