League recap: Walnut Ridge wins, gets boost in standings

Walnut Ridge was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in Columbus City - South. Earlier in the week, the Scots triumphed over South 40-12.

Eastmoor Academy led the league in scoring this week after putting up 45 points on West.

Walnut Ridge's dynamic duo of Jason Hawkins and Malik Robinson proved tough for the Bulldogs to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Hawkins threw for 110 yards and three touchdowns and Robinson had 88 yards receiving. Nick Butler helped Walnut Ridge's passing attack out by catching two balls for 50 yards.

Corry Benson provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Marion-Franklin beat Independence. He completed seven passes for 61 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 186 yards. Benson's favorite target this week was Darien Williams, who caught two passes for 21 yards.

6-foot-0 quarterback Benson of the Red Devils is the league leader in passing yards this season with 737. He has also thrown nine touchdowns. On the ground, Byron Mattox's team's Jaisean Johnson has rushed for 448 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Rob Wheelwright. The Walnut Ridge star has 18 catches for 388 yards.

A big matchup in Columbus City - South this week will be when the Scots take on Marion-Franklin. Walnut Ridge is in third place, while Brian Haffele's team is in first place.

There should be lots of points scored when the Scots and the Red Devils face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Walnut Ridge comes in having scored 147 this season, while Marion-Franklin has scored 180. The Scots scored 40 points last week as they topped South.
