Baseball Recap: Nine Straight Home Victories for St. Vincent-St. Mary

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only St. Vincent-St. Mary walked away with it. They skirted past the Chardon Hilltoppers 2-1. The victory was familiar territory for the Fighting Irish, who have now won three matchups in a row.

Matthew Large spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up seven Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, St. Vincent-St. Mary secured the win behind a pair of hitters. One of them was Zack Kurkey, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one RBI.

St. Vincent-St. Mary pushed their record up to 19-8 with the victory, which was their ninth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.1 runs over those games. As for Chardon, their defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 15-11.

Looking ahead, St. Vincent-St. Mary will face off against Highland at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Fighting Irish 3.4, the Hornets 2.6) so any runs scored will be well earned. Chardon does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
