Basketball Recap: La Vega Extends Winning Streak to Four

La Vega had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.3 points) and they went ahead and made it four on Saturday. They snuck past the West Trojans with a 50-45 victory. Given the Pirates' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 173rd, while the Trojans are ranked 696th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Despite the loss, West still got an impressive performance from Ayden Poteet, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 15 rebounds. Poteet is becoming a predictor of West's success: when he posts at least eight boards the team is 7-3 (and 4-5 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of AJ McGlothen, who posted nine points.

La Vega is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 6-2 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.3 points per game. As for West, their loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-8.

La Vega will welcome Buffalo at 12:30 p.m. on Monday. As for West, they will square off against Maypearl at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. West is facing Maypearl at the right time seeing as Maypearl is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
