Basketball Recap: Kalen Mayes Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Lancaster

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Mauldin, Denmark-Olar was happy to have turned things around on Monday. They came out on top against the Lancaster Bruins by a score of 48-37. Given the Vikings' advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 22nd, while the Bruins are ranked 88th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Denmark-Olar's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kalen Mayes led the charge by putting up 13 points and four steals. Mayes is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Aveion Walker was another key player, posting ten points along with eight boards and three steals.

Lancaster's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kemarja Peay, who posted 12 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Zatyra Walls, who had six points and seven rebounds.

Denmark-Olar's record is now 6-2. As for Lancaster, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-6.

Denmark-Olar didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 57-24 win against River Bluff on the 2nd. As for Lancaster, they will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Richland Northeast at 6:00 p.m. on January 6th.
