Basketball Recap: Lincoln Northeast Snags 14th Victory in Last 16 Games

After losing to Elkhorn South the last time they met, Lincoln Northeast decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Lincoln Northeast Rockets sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 72-70 victory over the Elkhorn South Storm on Saturday. Given the Rockets' advantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 19th, while the Storm are ranked 99th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Leading Lincoln Northeast to victory were Lazerek Houston and Grant Fredericks. Houston went 10-for-19 on his way to 34 points and six assists, while Fredericks shot 69% from the field en route to 21 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. Houston's afternoon made it eight games in a row in which he has scored at least 19 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Easton Switzer, who posted seven points.

They weren't the only ones working in the assist department: Lincoln Northeast was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive matches.

Elkhorn South's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cooper Mroczek, who dropped a double-double with 23 points and 13 boards. Another player making a difference was Lincoln Schwarz, who went 7-for-12 to rack up 17 points and five rebounds.

Lincoln Northeast has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 16 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 75.5 points over those games. Elkhorn South dropped their record down to 6-17 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road.

Lincoln Northeast has already played their next game, a 52-47 defeat against Lincoln Southeast on the 3rd. Elkhorn South does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
