Wilmington is 8-2 against Mercer since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Greyhounds will challenge the Mustangs at 4:15 p.m. Wilmington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
While Wilmington's victory against Hickory wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Greyhounds' pitchers stepped up to hand the Hornets a 1-0 shutout on Wednesday. The win was familiar territory for the Greyhounds, who have now won three matches in a row.
Wilmington saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kyla Baney, who went 1-for-2 with one double.
Meanwhile, Mercer hadn't done well against Sharpsville recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Mustangs came out on top against the Blue Devils by a score of 8-4. The victory continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Blue Devils: they've now won three in a row.
Angelina Eakman made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI.
In other batting news, Ainsley Baldwin was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 1-for-3. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Farren Baldwin, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.
Wilmington's record is now 6-1. As for Mercer, their record now sits at 5-2.
Mercer's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Wilmington has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .445. It's a different story for Mercer, though, as they've only averaged .340. Will they be able to contain Wilmington's hitters?
Wilmington couldn't quite finish off Mercer in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 and fell 7-5. Can the Greyhounds avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
