League recap: Topsail wins, gets boost in standings

Topsail was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in 2A East Central. The Pirates beat South Lenoir 47-20 earlier in the week.

Northside extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Croatan, 41-13. The win marks eighth in a row for the the Monarchs.

Swansboro's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Deandre Thompkins threw for 23 and one touchdown and Cameron Laspada had 23 yards receiving. On the ground Thompkins chipped in 140 yards. Thompkins helped Swansboro's passing attack out by catching one ball for seven yards.

Rodney Myers made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Blue Devils fell to Topsail. The 5-foot-10 senior recorded one fumble and grabbed two sacks.

Swansboro's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Pirates feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Chris Phipps has thrown for 251 yards and two touchdowns this season, while Thompkins has three catches for 68 yards. Thompkins leads the league in rushing with 778 yards.

A big matchup in 2A East Central this week will be when the Cougars take on East Duplin. Croatan is in third place, while the Panthers are in second place.

Northside took down David Perry's team 41-13 last week, the largest margin of any game.
