Andale manhandled
Nickerson 108-0 on Friday and the reaction from the losing coach might surprise you.
"I have absolutely nothing against what he did," Nickerson coach Taylor Bauman
told The Wichita Eagle about Andale coach Dylan Schmidt's approach to the lopsided score.
Andale, which has won 43 straight and is going for its fourth consecutive Kansas 3A title, led 78-0 at half and compiled 395 yards of offense and 12 touchdowns.
However, Andale played its junior varsity and freshman players in the entire second half, according to the Eagle.
"It was a tough game to be a part of, it really was," Schmidt told The Eagle. "We thought about kneeling it, but we felt like that would have been more disrespectful. We tried to slow things down and send it in slower. Give their staff credit: they weren't upset and they realized we were doing everything we could have on our end."
Andale is 5-0 and has outscored its opponents 346-48 this season. The Indians have scored 63, 60, 58 and 57 points in their other wins. Last season, Andale beat Trinity Academy 96-6.
The second half was played with a running clock and there's no mercy rule in Kansas as Andale scored three defensive touchdowns and a trio of freshmen scored in the second half.
"Obviously people are going to react to the final score, but I thought coach Schmidt handled it as well as he could have," Bauman said. "They put their young guys in early and their young guys just executed better than our old guys. So there's no hard feelings for what they did."
Nickerson defensive coordinator Parker Bruce, an Andale alumni, told the Eagle he was calling out the Andale play pre-snap but they couldn't stop the Indians.
"I think a lot of coaches can probably tell you exactly what Andale is going to do every Friday night and it just comes down to being able to stop them," Bauman said. "Right now no one can do it."
